In manufacturing quality control, the maximum amount of reject work pieces are often expressed in percent form, such as 5%. Technicians need to convert this percent to a fraction to calculate the maximum number of rejects on a 1500-piece production run.

A percentage is a fraction. What makes it special is that the denominator is always 100. Changing a percent to fraction format is done in 3 steps:

Change Percent to Fraction:
1. Drop the percent sign, keep the number.
2. Set the percentage number as a numerator over a denominator. The denominator is always 100.
3. Simplify your fraction as necessary.
.

### A Short Review

Example 1:

$\text{14% = }\frac{14}{100}=\color{green}{\frac{7}{50}}$
1.   14 becomes the numerator
2.    The % sign becomes a denominator of 100
3.    Reduce fraction by a factor of 2 since both the 14 and the 100 are even numbers, so they divide by 2
Example 2:

$\text{2.5% = }\frac{2.5}{100}=\frac{5}{200}=\color{green}{\frac{1}{40}}$
1.    2.5 becomes the numerator
2.    The % sign becomes a denominator of 100
3.    There can not be a decimal numerator. The 2.5 needs to be doubled to become a whole number. The same doubling is to be done to the denominator of 100, which becomes 200.
4.     Reduce fraction by a factor of 5 since both the 5 and the 200 are divisible by 5.

### Worksheet: Level 1

The operations used are clearly specified. Only one type of mathematical operation is used in a task.

### Worksheet: Level 1 Sample Question

Example:
On an instrument panel key pad 90% of the buttons are gray. Write a fraction to show this, reduce fraction to lowest terms.

### Worksheet: Level 1 Answer Key

$\frac{90}{100}=\color{green}{\frac{9}{10}}$

### Worksheet: Level 2

Tasks involve one or two types of mathematical operation. Few steps of calculation are required.

### Worksheet: Level 2 Sample Question

Example:
Write as a fraction in lowest terms:
25% = ?

### Worksheet: Level 2 Sample Answer

$\frac{25}{100}=\color{green}{\frac{1}{4}}$
